How to Apply


Local Rule 83.1 on admission of attorneys provides that any attorney who is of good personal and professional character, who is an active member in good standing of the bar of the State of Maine and who is not then disbarred from or under a period of suspension in any court of record in the United States is eligible for admission to the bar of this Court.

To be admitted to the bar of this Court, each applicant must:

  1. File an application and submit a fee of $181.00 to the Clerk’s Office (checks should be made payable to "Clerk, U. S. District Court").
  2. For admission ceremonies in:
    • Portland - Application and fee should be sent to:  Clerk, U.S. District Court, 156 Federal St., Portland, ME 04101
    • Bangor - Application and fee should be sent to:  Clerk, U.S. District Court, 202 Harlow St., 3rd Floor Bangor, ME 04401

When the application and fee have been processed by the Clerk's Office, the applicant will be informed where to appear for admission.  Applicants must bring a member of the bar of this Court to the admission ceremony to introduce the applicant to the Court and to move for the applicant’s admission to the bar.


The Attorney Admission Ceremony scheduled on June 11 in Portland and June 12 in Bangor have been canceled.
Chief Judge Levy has addressed how to be admitted to the Bar of this Court during this interim period in his General Order 2020-5 dated April 29, 2020, section J.
