Building Access  

 

Pursuant to United States Judicial Conference policy, the United States District Court for the District of Maine provides reasonable accommodations to persons with disabilities, including communication disabilities.

 

Building Accommodations

All District of Maine Courthouses are wheelchair accessible.  All public restrooms are wheelchair accessible.  All individuals seeking entrance to the Courthouse must present a valid, government-issued ID and pass through security, including a metal detector.  Elevators are equipped with braille signage and emergency call features to accommodate those with visual and hearing impairments.

 

Parking:

The Edward T. Gignoux Courthouse in Portland does not have dedicated public parking.  Visitors are encourage to:

Utilize a nearby parking garage or the City of Portland’s on-street parking meters.  There is a two-hour limit for each meter.

There is one handicapped parking spot near the back entrance of the Courthouse, off Newbury Street.  Please contact the Clerk’s Office prior to your arrival to make arrangements to park in the designated Courthouse ADA parking space. 

 

The Margaret Chase Smith Federal Building in Bangor does not have dedicated public parking.  Visitors are encourage to:

Utilize Bangor’s on-street parking meters across the street from the Courthouse.  Abbott Square Parking Lot is approximately 100 yards east of the building at the corner of Franklin and Harlow Streets.

There are limited handicapped parking spots directly in front of the building. 

 

Communication Disabilities

The Court will provide a sign language interpreter or other appropriate auxiliary aid or service to a party, witness, or juror.  If you are a participant in a court proceeding and you believe you will require assistive listening technology or a sign language interpreter, please contact the Court at least 3 business days prior to the Court hearing.
