Update on the Status of Operations

Update on the Status of Operations

January 29, 2019

A new continuing resolution that was signed into law on Friday, January 25, 2019 will fund the Judiciary’s fiscal year 2019 operations through February 15, 2019.

Federal courts had sustained funded operations, since the partial shutdown began in December, limiting and deferring non-critical operating costs and utilizing court filing fees and other available balances.

The Judiciary was expected to run out of money on February 1, and now officials are studying how long funded operations could continue if another shutdown occurs after February 15th. During this continuing resolution, the courts will continue to limit obligations to those necessary to carry out their mission and maintain current operations.

Payments to lawyers appointed to represent clients under the Criminal Justice Act, which were suspended beginning December 24, 2018, will resume.
