U.S. District Judge Stacey D. Neumann
On behalf of the District of Maine, I am pleased to announce that Stacey D. Neumann took the oath of office as United States District Judge on August 26, 2024, marking a significant moment in the Court’s history as she becomes the Court's twentieth federal district judge in the District of Maine.
Judge Neumann is a former partner at the law firm of Murray, Plumb & Murray in Portland, Maine, where her practice involved criminal defense, employment, and civil rights matters and litigation before Maine’s state and federal courts and the Maine Human Rights Commission. Judge Neumann has served on the District of Maine’s Criminal Justice Act (CJA) Panel and the Court’s CJA Panel Selection Committee, the Board of the Maine Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Board of Governors of the Maine State Bar Association, the U.S. Sentencing Commission’s Practitioners Advisory Group, the Maine Employment Lawyers Association, and the District of Maine Criminal Law Advisory Committee. Judge Neumann also served as an adjunct professor at the University of New England and as an invited faculty member of the Harvard Law School Trial Advocacy Program. She is a member of the Gignoux Inn of Court.
Before entering private practice, Judge Neumann served as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney and then an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maine. She has also worked as a public defender at the Vermont Office of the Defender General in Chittenden County and as a law clerk to the Honorable Peter W. Hall of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the Honorable John A. Dooley of the Vermont Supreme Court.
Judge Neumann received her J.D., magna cum laude, from Cornell Law School in 2005 and her B.A., magna cum laude, from James Madison University in 2000.
Judge Neumann fills the Article III judgeship created when the Honorable Jon D. Levy took inactive senior status on May 5, 2024. The Court will host an investiture ceremony for Judge Neumann at a later date. Please join the Court in extending a warm welcome to Judge Neumann.
