Michael J. Penders Selected as Chief U.S. Probation and Pretrial Services Officer

MICHAEL J. PENDERS SELECTED AS CHIEF U.S. PROBATION AND PRETRIAL SERVICES OFFICER

The Judges of the U.S. District Court for the District of Maine are pleased to announce that Michael J. Penders has been selected to serve as the District’s next Chief U.S. Probation and Pretrial Services Officer. Michael has served the District as the Deputy Chief U.S. Probation Officer since 2016.

Michael began his career with the federal judiciary in 2005 when he was appointed a United States Probation Officer in the District of Columbia. In 2012, Michael was chosen by the District of Maine to serve as a Supervisory U.S. Probation Officer in the District’s Bangor office. In 2016, he was promoted to the position of Deputy Chief U.S. Probation Officer.

During his federal career Michael has been selected for a variety of national working groups. Most recently he has served the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts on the National Information Standards Working Group and was selected by the Federal Judicial Center as a trainer for their Management Development Program. Michael holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Connecticut and a Masters of Management from American Public University.

Michael will begin his new role on September 30, 2023, and is replacing Kimberly Rieger who is retiring.
