In September, 2008, the District Court adopted a new Criminal Justice Act Plan which established a CJA Panel Selection Committee. The Committee is charged with creating an
application process for the establishment of a qualified CJA Panel for the District of Maine. The
Committee has met and created the accompanying application. The application is designed to
gather sufficient information without being too burdensome.
The Committee hopes that all currently active members of the CJA Panel will apply and that
attorneys who have not in the past served will apply, as well. Even if you are currently on the
panel you must complete the new application to be considered for the new panel. Preliminary calculations indicate the new panel will be about the same size as the current active
panel. We encourage all attorneys with an interest to apply.
Please complete the application and send it in by April 1, 2009. The completed application
can be turned in at the Portland Clerk’s Office, mailed to Renee Bender, U.S. District Court, 156
Federal St., Portland, ME 04101, or e‐mailed to CJA@med.uscourts.gov.
If you have any questions about the application or the process, feel free to call Renee
Bender at (207) 780‐3356, David Beneman, Federal Defender, at (207) 553‐7070, ext. 101, or
Bruce Mallonee, National CJA Panel Representative at (207) 992‐2262
Thank you for your interest in serving on the CJA Panel.
