Welcome to the United States District Court of Maine!

Our District is rich in history. The District of Maine was among the first federal courts established by the Judiciary Act in 1789. President George Washington appointed the Court’s first judge, David Sewall, on September 26, 1789. You can learn more about our Court’s fascinating history by clicking on the Court History tab above.

The District of Maine holds court in Bangor at the Margaret Chase Smith U.S. Courthouse and Federal Building and in Portland at the Edward T. Gignoux U.S. Courthouse. The Clerk’s Office in both of these locations strives to provide excellent service and timely information to the bar and the general public.

Take advantage of the many educational opportunities for teachers, students and other community groups at the District of Maine. Come to the courthouse for a field trip, take a tour, talk with Court staff, or observe a trial. Invite the Court to your classroom! Staff members are happy to present information to your students about the federal court system, jury service, the constitution or civics; and we will gladly work with teachers to offer learning opportunities that meet the Maine Department of Education learning standards.

Thank you for visiting our website! We appreciate the opportunity to serve you and look forward to seeing you at the United States District Court.

Christa Berry, Clerk of Court
